Factor in any legendary mod effects, like explosive or bleeding, etc., and auto weapons can blow single shot ones out of the water for damage output, if you perked right. While the automatic weapons do less damage per projectile, do the math- each VATS burst which hits puts 3 bullets into the target, versus 1 bullet with single-shot weapons. Still, if you've got plenty of ammo or don't mind buying extra, the Rambo commando style is certainly fun. but VATS is far more effective and conservative. You can limit that some with careful, short, well aimed bursts. I find generally using automatics without VATS will blow a lot of ammo, wasting much of it with the recoil. Overseer's Guardian? Good as a missile launcher for stopping power.

Fully modded and silenced auto weapons plus Commando perk in stealth mode rocks.
